I saw a temple today...Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat, aka "City Temple", was built for the king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. Okay, that was lifted from Wikipedia. But in all seriousness, this is the reason to come to Cambodia. This is the reason why I will be satisfied if I never see another temple or ruin in my life. I saw Ankor Wat. In its time, the city held over 1 million people, the largest in the world. It's an incredible feat and speaks to the Khmer legacy that we see today. It wasn't too difficult to get up at 430am, ride the tuk tuk through the cool morning air, and stumble around in the dark with a few hundred other people. Do we join them at the lake edge and wait for the sunrise? Screw it! The prime spots are already gone, let's go into the temple. The silence I expected was hardly there. Instead the jungle symphony fell upon me like a blanket in the night as I walked with Roy and Richard through outer wall, and then through the inner wall to find ourselves at the foot of THE Angkor Wat. With Roy's torch, we saw a roped off area at the bottom of the steps leading up. It took all of 5 seconds to decide to climb, and from there we rose higher and higher. I couldn't fathom how steep the ascent was, but my heart was racing from the prospect of getting caught, or falling, or just from the fact that I was alone near the top of Angkor Wat. It was a magical scene, and the start of my exploration of the ancient Khmer city. Oh and near the temple, I got a little too close to that monkey. It almost attacked me! I had to back away slowly, periodically stomping at the ground when it ran toward me with bare teeth. All I wanted was a picture!
